Solar in Maine.
Highest electric rates in New England. Highest heating-oil dependency in the country. the rate-hedge math still pencils out.

Your rate climbed 80%+ in 15 years.
Maine's residential electric rate climbed from 14¢/kWh in 2010 to 25¢/kWh by 2025. CMP and Versant rate cases have pushed bills up 6 to 12% YoY since 2022.
What an 8 kW solar install in Maine actually pays back.
An 8 kW rooftop array on a Portland home generates ~9,000 kWh/yr. Maine's Net Energy Billing program credits exports at the full retail rate for 20 years, locked at the date of interconnection. Layered with the ME sales tax exemption and Efficiency Maine financing.

Highest electric rates in New England, full retail Net Energy Billing, and a 60%+ oil-heat housing stock about to electrify. Four numbers tell the whole story.
The rate hedge does the work.
- Locked production cost (LCOE)~9¢/kWh for 30 years
- Maine retail electric rate today~30¢/kWh and rising
- Net Energy Billing (NEB), exports credited at retail1:1 retail rate
- 25-year savings vs. utility rates (rate inflation 6%/yr)~$95,000+
- Lease/PPA option, third-party owner still claims Section 48 ITCsavings passed through
Maine residential rates have inflated 6–12% YoY since 2022. A solar system locks your production cost well below what you're paying CMP or Versant today, for 30 years, regardless of what the next rate case does.
From first call to permission to operate.
A typical Maine residential solar install runs 10–14 weeks from site survey to grid interconnection. Permitting and inspection sit on most of that runway.
The real questions Maine homeowners ask.
The questions that actually come up in the first installer conversation, answered straight, for a typical Maine homeowner in 2026.
Does solar even work this far north?
Yes, and better than most people think. Maine averages 4.0–4.5 peak sun hours per day, comparable to Germany (which has installed more solar per capita than nearly any country on earth). Cold weather increases panel efficiency, and snow typically slides off pitched panels within a day. The summer months produce a surplus that NEB credits roll into the winter.
What about snow in winter?
Most residential systems in Maine are mounted at a 30°+ pitch. Snow that lands on panels usually slides off within 24-48 hours of accumulation, especially as the dark panel surface warms. Annual production loss from snow cover in Maine averages 3–5%, already factored into the 9,500 kWh/year estimate.
What happens to NEB credits I don't use?
Excess kWh credits roll forward month-to-month for 12 months. Most residential systems are sized so summer production builds a credit bank that gets drawn down through fall and winter. Properly sized, you offset close to 100% of annual usage.
CMP or Versant, does it matter which utility I'm on?
Both Central Maine Power (CMP) and Versant Power participate in NEB. The interconnection paperwork and queue times differ slightly, but the financial structure is the same. Your installer handles the paperwork either way.
Should I add a battery now or later?
If you want backup power during outages, common in coastal Maine and during winter storms, adding battery storage at install is more cost-effective than retrofitting later. the per-kWh case for batteries is more about resilience than payback in 2026. (A lease/PPA financing structure can still pass through the Section 48 ITC on storage paired with solar.) If your priority is purely bill savings, NEB makes a battery less financially urgent. Your Score will weigh the trade-off for your specific home.
What if I move before payback?
Multiple national studies show solar systems add to a home's resale value at roughly the cost of the system minus depreciation, typically recapturing most of your investment if you sell early. In Maine specifically, with high heating costs and rising electric rates, a fully-installed system is increasingly an expected feature, not a premium one.
