Heat pumps in Massachusetts.
MassSave whole-home rebates up to $8,500, layered with the Mass CEC Clean Heat adders and the 0% APR HEAT Loan up to $25,000. Most projects move forward with no money down on day one.

Gas bills have climbed every year.
Massachusetts residential gas climbed from ~$1.30/therm in 2010 to $1.85/therm by 2025. A heat pump locks you off that ride. Your heating load runs on electricity, which has its own trajectory, but heat pumps deliver 2.5× the heat per unit of input compared with what's possible burning anything.
What a cold-climate heat pump install actually pays back.
A 3-ton ducted heat pump (R-32, cold-climate certified) replaces your existing heating with a single all-season electric system. The rebate stack below shows what Massachusetts pays back on day one. The red line shows what staying on your current fuel costs you over 15 years.

The honest FAQ.
Actual questions that come up in the first installer conversation, answered for a typical Massachusetts homeowner in 2026.
Who qualifies for the $16,000 Enhanced tier?
Households at or below 60% State Median Income. Several pathways prove this: household income documentation, current enrollment in LIHEAP / fuel assistance, SNAP, MassHealth (qualifying categories), or your utility's discount rate (R-2 on National Grid, R-4 on Eversource). The Enhanced track is capped at $16,000 in rebates and typically covers the lion's share of the project; the standard track pays up to $8,500 plus bonuses. Your installer documents which track applies at signing.
What does R-410A mean and why does it matter?
Starting January 1, 2026, MassSave removed all heat pumps using R-410A refrigerant from the Qualified Products List. Only systems using R-32 or R-454B refrigerants qualify for rebates. Some contractors still have R-410A inventory, always ask what refrigerant your proposed system uses before signing.
What's the $500 sizing bonus?
A bonus applied when your heat pump is sized to meet 90-120% of your home's total heating load at the outdoor design temperature, per ACCA Manual J calculations. Most properly sized installations qualify, but it requires the contractor to complete a Manual J calculation, not all do by default.
Can I use any contractor?
No. Only MassSave-participating contractors can deliver rebated work. Using a non-participating contractor means forfeiting the entire rebate, so contractor selection is the single most important decision.
